It might cost $1 more to visit the John Ball Zoo.  The Kent County Commission could decide the proposed rate increase at its February 24 meeting. Zoo Director Bert Vescolani says the zoo needs the  estimated $200,000 additional revenue just to cover expenses.

“One vendor of meat for animals is tripling the price,” said Zoo Director Bert Vescolani. “This hike is to offset expenses, not to throw lavish parties. We’ve reduced staff, we’ve reduced energy costs. We’ve reduced, reduced, reduced.”

For those who can't afford the price of admission,Vescolani said that discount programs and occasional free-admission days will continue.

Current summertime admission fees are $5.50, $6.50 and $7.50 for children, seniors and adults, respectively. Each would rise by $1, if the County Commission approves.

Winter season prices, currently at $3.50 for children and $4 for all adults, would rise by 50 cents.

The new fees would take effect when the zoo reopens March 1.
