The Ionia Department of Public Safety and the Michigan State Police are currently searching for an inmate who escaped from the Ionia Correctional Facility.

According to the department's Facebook page, the suspect in question is 40-year-old Michael David Elliot who was serving a life sentence for several offenses, including four counts of first degree murder.

Elliot is described as a white man with brown hair and eyes. He is 5 feet, 8 inches tall and weighs 165 pounds. He has also been known to go by the names Michael Delarosa and Michael Shreader. He has a scar on his upper lip.

After escaping the prison, Elliot abducted a woman and drove with her to Indiana.

The Michigan Department of Corrections says that Elliot kidnapped the woman using a knife or box cutter, then drove with her to Elkhart County, Ind., and stopped for gas.

The woman was able to escape from Elliot at the gas station. Elliot then left the gas station and is still at large.

Police believe that Elliot is still driving a car he stole from a woman he abducted. That vehicle is described as a 2004 red Jeep Liberty with license plate 5FTG55 and has Bugs Bunny and Tasmanian Devil stickers on it.

Ionia Public Schools said classes will be in session Monday since Elliot is no longer in the Ionia area.
