I have never been to an Opera before, much less backstage at the Opera.  So when  Sarah Mieras from Opera Grand Rapids suggested I visit, I was kinda geeked.

Just a few notes from backstage: Everyone backstage is very helpful. It was dress rehearsal, but you didn't get the feeling anyone was nervous. Up close most of the props don't look like much, but magnified under the lights they look amazing. We were not allowed to "touch" any of the props because it would be a "union violation". I guess that's what made me want to do it, but I didn't. The performers report early for make-up, sometimes spending two hours in the chair. All of the wigs used are made from real hair. Opera GR rents them. I couldn't stay for the show, but I promised to be back for The Barber of Seville in April. I already know some of the music thanks to Bugs Bunny.  Here's a Mano Lescaut synopsis courtesy of Opera Grand Rapids.

This Valentine's Day escape with Opera Grand Rapids into the streets of the late 18th Century with the young and beautiful Manon. Join us and follow the heart of a young woman from the walls of a convent, to the lavish streets of Paris, to a New Orleans.

Puccini's amazing score, the voices of a nationally assembled cast, and the music of the Grand Rapids Symphony promises to make this a night at the opera to remember!

There still are tickets for Manon Lescaut February 11-12 at Devos Hall.   Visit here for more info.
