Disney’s New Streaming Service Will Include ‘Star Wars,’ Marvel Movies
Netflix’s scramble to cut some kind of deal with Disney after the company announced their own Disney-exclusive streaming service last month seems to have come to naught, as CEO Bob Iger announced that Marvel and Star Wars movies would also be among the films appearing exclusively on the new app Disney hopes to launch by 2019. Better get those Moana viewings in fast, folks.
‘Mean Girls,’ the Musical Is Coming to Broadway Spring 2018
Mean Girls is finally, finally coming to Broadway. Rumors of a musical have abounded for years, and now Tina Fey and Lorne Michaels are bringing it to us as early as next spring. That’s so — well, you know.
James Cameron Says ‘Wonder Woman’ Is ‘A Step Backwards’ From ‘Terminator’s Sarah Connor
It just wouldn’t be Hollywood without directors of massively successful movies talking jive about other directors’ massively successful movies. James Cameron is the latest offender, offering up some boiling hot takes about Patty Jenkins’ summer hit Wonder Woman. Apparently, it wasn’t feminist enough for ol’ James.
Quirky, Fun Guy Christopher Nolan Won’t Let You Drink or Sit Down on Set
It’s common knowledge by now that Christopher Nolan is not like other guys. He doesn‘t have an e-mail address or carry a cell phone (he doesn’t let anyone on set bring their phones with them either), which is probably why he often works with the same group of actors — because they’re the only ones who have the homing pigeons that know the way back to Nolan’s fortress. A couple new Nolan quirks recently came to light after the release of Dunkirk, and boy, do they make being on this guy’s set sound like a whole lot of fun.
Mark Hamill Really Hates One ‘Star Wars’ Toy in Particular
When you’re part of a giant franchise, there are going to be toys of you. That’s just how these things tend to work. Star Wars is in a realm all of its own, with toys ranging from giant Star Destroyer LEGO sets to Elan Sleazebaggano action figures, and, naturally, the stars of the franchise have their favorites and least-favorites. Mark Hamill recently shared his opinion on what he thinks is the worst Luke Skywalker toy, and it’s quite a doozy.
New ‘Ferdinand’ Trailer: There Are Hedgehogs and a Pitbull Needle Drop in This
Remember that book you loved as a child, that featured simple black and white illustrations of a Spanish bull who’d rather smell flowers and sit under his favorite cork tree than get riled and fight a bunch of dudes with pointy sticks in an arena? Well, it’s a movie now, and none other than John Cena is voicing the titular Ferdinand, whose chance encounter with the back end of a bee sends him packed into a truck and hauled off to the bullfights. There’s just one wrinkle: he won’t fight.
Someone Robbed the Largest Privately-Owned ‘Star Wars’ Collection on Earth
The owner of the largest privately-owned Star Wars memorabilia collection in the world, known as Rancho Obi-Wan, has announced today that it has been systematically robbed over a period of many months from 2015 to 2016. Steve Sansweet, who offers tours of the ranch and its many pieces of Star Wars history, says that not only do the items taken make up about $200,000, it appears to be an inside job.
‘The Boss Baby 2’ Announced for Spring 2021
So, get ready for the Baby Cinematic Universe, I guess. DreamWorks Animation has just announced that The Boss Baby sequel audiences have all been clamoring for will definitely be happening, definitely also star Alec Baldwin, and definitely come out on March 26, 2021, which is so far into the future that maybe we can all forget about it by then.
‘The Jetsons’ Movie to Be Developed, Possibly Directed by ‘Sausage Party’s Conrad Vernon
In today’s Things That Make You Go Hmm news: The new animated Jetsons movie, based on the popular Hanna-Barbera TV series, has brought one of Sausage Party’s co-directors, Conrad Vernon, on board to “develop” and probably also to direct the movie.
New Netflix Instant Releases: June 2017
It’s that time again: time to round up everything coming and going from all the streaming services at the start of the new month. Netflix has a pretty fantastic slate for this June, which includes their Cannes contender Okja, directed by Bong Joon-ho and starring Tilda Swinton and Jake Gyllenhaal. There’s also a few popular 2016 releases like Xavier Dolan’s It’s Only the End of the World, and Catfight, that movie about Sandra Oh and Anne Heche beating the living daylights out of each other. And if you want to hear a bunch of animated plants sing Simon & Garfunkel’s “The Sound of Silence,” give Trolls a shot.
Benedict Cumberbatch’s ‘How the Grinch Stole Christmas’ Gets Sly First Official Promo Art
Just in case you forgot, we’re getting another movie based on Dr. Seuss’s immortal holiday classic How the Grinch Stole Christmas pretty soon. And also just in case you forgot, said title character is going to be voiced by none other than Benedict Cumberbatch. And said Grinch movie, now has its first official, extremely fuzzy promo art.
Disney’s Live-Action ‘Mulan’ Might Have Songs After All
Last week, the Internet entered into something of a panic when it was announced that Niki Caro, the director of the live-action Mulan remake, didn’t have any songs planned for the movie. For those of you who were bereft at the thought of no “I’ll Make a Man Out of You” army training/dance number, don’t freak out yet. While there aren’t any songs in the script right now, that doesn’t mean there won’t be any at all.
