Long workdays and full schedules make our lives busy, but it's important to take the time to appreciate the small joys of everyday life.

One bike ride with a 4-year-old and you'll quickly be reminded of how to appreciate the small things.

Many 4-year-olds have busy schedules, but they know how to live in the moment. For a 4-year-old, a full calendar is no excuse to rush and no reason to not enjoy every moment of the day.

Every bike ride with my 4-year-old is a reminder of how much fun it can be to stop and enjoy the little things.

Every police car, fire truck, ambulance and motorcycle is just as exciting as the first one you ever saw.

Find a bump or a pothole in the path?

Don't go around it. Go through it. That's what they are there for.

Take it easy coasting down a hill?

No way. You pedal fast down hills and yell "WOOHOO!" because it's so much fun.

You don't stop for bumps with a 4-year-old, but you might stop to scratch an itch or to watch an airplane or a squirrel.

The little things make all the difference.

As adults we can't always stop to appreciate the little things, but if we don't at least slow down it won't be long before we forget what we're missing.

We can learn a lot from a 4-year-old.
