Michigan's Music Icons: Unveiling the Top 11 artists who dominated the charts in the U.S. These 11 Michigan artists not only ruled the music industry in album sales but also changed pop culture forever.

Green released his next album, Al Green Gets Next to You, at the end of 1970 which featured his legendary first hit single, “Tired of Being Alone.” In 1972, Green released “Let’s Stay Together,” which reached number eight on the pop charts, and four months later he released “I’m Still in Love with You,” which reached number four on the charts. His songs “Call Me,” “Here I Am,” and “Sha-La-La (Make Me Happy),” became top ten gold singles, lasting star power.

Iconic singer-songwriters Al Green and Sting and their smooth sounds were feted at the 37th Kennedy Center Honors, which aired Tuesday night on CBS. Green and Sting were honored along with actor and filmmaker Tom Hanks, ballerina Patricia McBride, singer-songwriter Sting and comedienne Lily Tomlin.

Rock and Roll Hall of Famer, Al Green spent much of his youth in Grand Rapids. When he played in Grand Rapids last year fans were left disappointed when he only played for 60 minutes. Now, Al Green has disappointed again by declining to play at the Inaugural Ball.

There are good concerts and bad concerts, but even the best performers can leave fans disappointed when they don't play long enough.  That exactly what happened in Grand Rapids Monday night. Al Green performed at Frederik Meijer Gardens Monday night.  He only played for 60 minutes, most fans expected much more.

This summer will be the busiest and biggest summer concert season ever at the Fredrik Meijer Gardens and Sculpture Park. There will be 25 concerts between June and August, highlighted by one of Grand Rapids’ favorite sons, soul and gospel star Al Green, who will return to his longtime home for his first concert in 12 years.
