Michigan Is Not Rude – Ohio Is, Though
77,000 Americans were asked by YouGov.com which state was the rudest. They then ranked our republic in order of civility. Michigan did NOT make this rude list. But ya know who did? Ohio!
Participants were asked if their own home state was rude. The smallest state is also the rudest by their own admission. 42% of Rhode Islanders think their state is abrasive. Only 9% of Rhode Island residents believe their state is polite. The East Coast had a few states rank high for rudeness, however southern charm and hospitality faired well. Florida was the exception for southern states. Midwesterners feel the region maintains its reputation for politeness, with the exception of Ohio.
Here are the top 10 rudest states:
- Rhode Island
- New Jersey
- New York
On the opposite end, who thinks they are the nicest? Hawaii! And the Top 10 nicest states looks like this:
- South Dakota
- North Dakota
According to this poll, here in Michigan we don't find ourselves as rude. But we also don't think we're overly nice. That puts us somewhere in between naughty and nice. Lastly, the poll shows that 12% of Michiganders don't know if Michigan is rude or not. Rude is defined in the dictionary as:
- offensively impolite or ill-mannered.
- having a startling abruptness.
- roughly made or done; lacking subtlety or sophistication.
