11-Year-Old Brings Squirt Gun to School, Michigan School on Lockdown
An elementary school in Northern Michigan was put on lockdown Monday (2/3) after a student was reported to be in possession of a weapon. That weapon turned out to be a water gun.
School Authorities Take All Threats Seriously
Unlike a generation ago when water guns at school were not really a big deal (trust me on this), school officials take the presence of anything that could be seen as a weapon seriously.
Upon hearing that there was a student in possession of a weapon, authorities from the Manistee City Police, Michigan State Police, and Tribal police were called to Kennedy Elementary in Filer Township. Filer Township is in Manistee County, about 35 miles north of Ludington.

The situation was investigated and it was quickly determined that the student was in possession of a squirt gun. Up North Live reports that the Manistee County Sheriff determined that the student had no malicious intent, and had no intent of threatening or harming anyone at the school.
Manistee County Sheriff Offers Cautions Parents
Sheriff Brian Gutowski's office released a statement, advising parents about items that could be perceived as weapons.
"The Manistee County Sheriff’s Office takes any potential school threat very seriously. We continually work with our partners in public safety and our partners in our school districts to respond to incidents like this.
We ask that all parents with school-aged children have a conversation regarding what is appropriate to bring to school.
This is an ongoing investigation, and we will release additional relevant information when and if it becomes available."
