A major pharmacy chain is preparing to close 270 stores nationwide as part of an ongoing strategy shift, and two Michigan locations are on the chopping block.

CVS is moving forward with a restructuring plan to close hundreds of additional stores in 2025, saying the closures are necessary to optimize the operation of existing locations and pharmacies.

Why Are So Many Pharmacy Stores Closing?

The company previously closed around 900 stores between 2022 and 2024. A CVS spokesperson told Newsweek the closures are based on several factors, including population shifts, consumer buying patterns, and community needs.

According to its website, CVS operates 238 locations across 115 Michigan cities. Nationwide, the company has roughly 9,000 stores, including locations inside Target and select grocery stores.

Michigan's Recent Pharmacy Losses

Michigan has already seen its fair share of pharmacy closures in recent years. Rite Aid shuttered all of its nearly 200 remaining stores in the state last year. The chain still operates about 1,200 locations across 15 states, with most remaining stores located in Pennsylvania.

Just as many customers were shifting their prescriptions to competing pharmacies, Walgreens announced a plan to shutter hundreds of U.S. locations as well.

Which Michigan CVS Locations Are Affected?

While CVS has yet to release an official list of stores slated for closure in 2025, a consumer coupon and retail news website has compiled a list of 34 locations that have recently closed or are scheduled to close this year.

That list includes the following Michigan stores:

  • 28774 Gratiot Ave., Roseville
  • 27700 Harper Ave., St. Clair Shores

We’ll update this list as more information becomes available.
