Even though Michigan's home to a thriving food scene and a myriad of dining options, there are still some major chain restaurants that have yet to set up shop in the Mitten State.

We found out the top 5 biggest restaurant chains that have yet to open a location in Michigan. As luck would have it, I've had the opportunity to travel and sample all of these restaurants a time or two (or many more, but who's counting?)... here's what we're missing:

5. Bojangles

Bojangles is primarily based in the southeastern United States, and is well-known for its chicken and biscuits. It leans hard into the "Bo" part of its name, selling featured menu items such as "Bo-Berry Biscuits" (blueberry) and "Bo-Tato Rounds" (think hash browns). Probably the juiciest fried chicken I've ever had from a fast food joint - and it's delicious.

According to Visual Capitalist, Bojangles has 788 locations in the US, none of which are in Michigan.

4. Zaxby's

Zaxby's has 922 locations across the country, but the chain has yet to make its way into Michigan (the closest ones are in and around Indianapolis).

Like Bojangles, this place is chicken-based; but unlike Bojangles, Zaxby's features wings and chicken fingers (or Fingerz, to lean into the Zaxby's "Z", as the restaurant does on the menu every time it can). The indoor color scheme is very Culver's-like.

3. Whataburger

Based in Texas, Whataburger has 925 locations, mainly across the southern tier of the United States.

Its burgers are big and made to order, and its shoestring fries are not to be missed.

2. Carl's Jr.

Almost didn't include this one, due to its similarity to sister restaurant Hardee's. But the fact is - there are 1,044 Carl's Jr. locations across the United States, and none of them are in Michigan.

This place is primarily known for its charbroiled burgers. However, you're likely to encounter quite a few unique items whenever you stop in - like maybe a Big Angus Guacamole Bacon Burger, for instance.

1. Jack in the Box

Most fast food restaurants have set hours, but a few of them are known for being open 24 hours a day. Jack in the Box is one of those, featuring menu items sure to satisfy whatever cravings you might have around the clock - burgers, chicken, tacos, you name it.

Jack in the Box has 2,180 locations spread throughout the US, and even though the chain currently does not operate in Michigan, it is expected to grow into the state soon.

The Most Popular Fast Food Restaurants in Michigan

What are the most popular fast-food restaurants here in Michigan? If you're automatically assuming that the chain with the Golden Arches has the most locations, you're in for a shock.

As you take a look at the pics below, see if you can figure out which location we've featured. All pictures are from the greater Flint area, and we've left in just enough background for you to be able to make an educated guess.

The answers are below.

By the way, the ranking is based on the restaurants with the most locations in The Mitten, based on data from the Friendly City Lab at Georgia Tech. Their numbers are based on data compiled in 2021, so some numbers may have fluctuated since then.
