I've been drinking Orange Crush ever since I was a kid...and I still enjoy it. But after all these decades, I'm just finding out that Orange Crush had its own mascot.

Like Frosted Flakes has Tony the Tiger and Planters has Mr. Peanut, Crush had its own mascot many years ago: 'Crushy'.

This revelation came about when a building on the corner of 13th & 27th Avenue in the U.P. town of Menominee was stripped down. There, under the siding, was an old painted Crush advertisement stating “Drink Orange Crush...and Feel Fresh” that may have been put there in the 1930s or 40s.

'Crushy' was first seen in 1911 in an ad that depicted him crushing oranges, in an attempt to drive home the idea that Orange Crush was made from 'fresh-squeezed' oranges.

But that was not the case: the flavor came from the oil that was squeezed out of the orange skin and pulp was later added to make it appear 'fresh-squeezed'. In 1930, they quit adding pulp and it became the pop we know it as today.

Who knows how long the town of Menominee will keep that old advertisement? I hope for many years...it's a classic.

In the gallery below are some images of that building (thanks to Midwest Explorer on Facebook) among other Crush paraphernalia...
