This Magical West Michigan Story Walk is The Perfect Escape For Your Kids

Summer has arrived, and if you're like most West Michigan parents you may be frustrated with trying to entertain bored kids, tired of telling them to go outside, and wishing you could get them to take some time away from their screens.

The Loutit District Library in Grand Haven has come up with a fun way to get kids reading this summer. Their program, called Storywalk, turns a simple walk in the park into a reading adventure.

This month, you can find the Storywalk at Hofma Park on Ferris Street. They’ve chosen the book “Nature Spy Guide” by Shelly Rotner, taken it apart, and posted the pages on laminated signs along a half-mile, stroller-friendly trail through the woods. It’s a great way to enjoy the outdoors while discovering a story. The Storywalk is open daily from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. until the end of June.

In August, the Storywalk moves to Connor Bayou with a new book. This time, it’s “On a Magical Do-Nothing Day” by Beatrice Alemagna. The one-mile walk combines paved and dirt trails, and the story follows a boy who finds adventure outside after putting down his video game controller.

So go ahead, get outside, and enjoy these story walk experiences. It’s a perfect way to savor summer while encouraging kids to read and explore nature.
