The Grand Rapids Griffins Probably spend countless hours on the ice each year between practice and games. But, for 24 hours they're skating to help others instead of their own game.

They call it The Great Skate Winterfest, and this is the first time the team has been able to host the event since before the pandemic in 2020.

What is The Great Skate Winterfest?

The Great Skate is a 24 hour period in which the Grand Rapids Griffin's Hockey Team has at least one member of the team or coach on the ice at Rosa Park Circle in downtown Grand Rapids. The festivities begin Saturday at noon, then after their home game, the Griffins will take the ice at Rose Park Circle starting at 10pm.

The purpose of the event is to raise money for the Griffin's youth foundation, Griffins Youth Foundation, which helps empower kids who want to play hockey by helping them afford fees and gear. According to their website, "the Griffins Youth Foundation promotes academic excellence, community involvement and healthy lifestyles among the youth of West Michigan, enhancing their lives through hockey and ice-related sports."

If you can't make it to the event (or maybe you're just wobbly on skates like me) you can also participate in their online silent auction that will also be raising money this weekend.

Should be a great reason to get out and check out the ice skating rink at Rosa Parks Circle this weekend.
