The City of South Haven has not had the greatest luck getting and keeping a police chief.

The city released a statement on Thursday, April 24, stating that their most recent chief of police, Dennis Honholt, had resigned his position with the city after it was discovered that he hadn't resigned from his previous position in Tennessee.

Prior to Honholt coming on board, the chief of police in South Haven was Kevin Swope. Swope joined the department in January 2025, but, according to the Herald Palladium, resigned only a month later, citing "personal family reasons".

The city obviously wanted to fill the position quickly and thought that they had found the perfect person in Dennis Honholt, who had previously been the chief of police in Dover, Tennessee.

Honholt was hired and began his job with the City of South Haven on April 1.

City of South Haven's Police Chief Resigns

In a move that surprised everyone, however, Holmholt tendered his resignation with the City of South Haven on Tuesday, April 24, after officials in South Haven learned that Honholt hadn't resigned his previous position in Dover. He had been the chief of police in Dover since March 2020.

In fact, Holnholt is still listed as the police chief on the city's website as of the time of the writing of this article.

However, Honholt had been in office for such a short period of time, that we've been unable to find an official photo of him serving the South Haven Police Department.

In a statement on the city's website, it said,

City leadership was shocked and disappointed to learn Honholt failed to resign his position in Tennessee once he accepted the position as our police chief.

The city went on to say that they understand the public's frustration with having now had three different police chiefs over the span of one year, and that it is "working to appoint an interim leader for the department."
