It has been a year today since Blink 182's Travis Barker proposed to Kourtney Kardashian.

In episode two of the latest season of The Kardashians, the audience is taken on a trip back to the past when Kourtney Kardashian (now Barker) was planning her dream wedding to Travis Barker.

Ultimately, the couple decided to get married at L'Olivetta, a villa owned by Dolce & Gabbana, in Portofino, Italy.

However, in this particular episode, Kourtney mentions how she thought of going the quaker wedding route.

What is a quaker wedding?

According to Brides.com, a quaker wedding, better known as a self-uniting marriage, is

a legal document that allows a couple to be married in the absence of a third-party officiant. Self-uniting marriages are sometimes referred to as 'Quaker' marriages because the custom as we largely know it today originated among the Religious Society of Friends.

That is a drawn-out and fancy way of saying you have the opportunity to declare you and your significant other married without the need for an officiant.

As of now, only eight U.S. states allow you to legally get a self-uniting marriage license.

  • California
  • Colorado
  • Illinois
  • Kansas
  • Maine
  • Nevada
  • Pennsylvania
  • District of Columbia (make my home a state, please!)

Sadly, the state of Michigan does not legally recognize self-uniting marriages. However, you can have an out-of-state ordained person or friend marry you.

The amount that out-of-state residents pay to get a marriage license in Michigan is the same amount to get legally married without an officiant in D.C.

So, if Michigan adopted this different aspect of a wedding ceremony, nothing would change.

As someone who wants the smallest amount of people at my wedding and attending my wedding, this would be the best option for me!

Plus, to me, it makes the wedding a little more special and intimate if you and your significant other can officiate your own special day.

Whether you are religious or not, this is one beautiful home. Materials from the original home-like, ceilings, the bell tower, the doors, and more were included in the modernization of the historical landmark in Grand Haven.
