The NFL has handed down a fine to Detroit Lions wide receiver Jameson Williams for his fun touchdown celebration during Monday's game against the Seattle Seahawks.

Williams, who scored a 70-yard touchdown, celebrated by dunking the football over the goalpost, a move honoring Lions legend Calvin Johnson.

This act, however, was deemed unsportsmanlike conduct and resulted in a fine of $14,069.

What Is Unsportsmanlike Conduct?

Unsportsmanlike conduct in the NFL refers to actions that violate the principles of sportsmanship and fair play.

This non-contact foul can result in a 15-yard penalty assessed after the completion of a play.

Key examples include:

  • Verbal abuse of officials or opponents.
  • Taunting an opponent, particularly during or after a play.
  • Excessive celebrations, especially those involving props or multiple players.
  • Removing a helmet during play, which is considered a safety violation.
  • Leaving the bench during a fight or altercation.

If a player commits unsportsmanlike conduct after scoring, the penalty is enforced on the ensuing kickoff, not affecting the score itself.

However, if the conduct is deemed flagrant, it can lead to ejection from the game.

The NFL's decision to penalize Williams reflects its ongoing stance against excessive celebrations and the use of props during games.

I would love to see the NFL give Travis Kelce an unsportsmanlike penalty for a Touchdown celebration and then see what happens when Swifties find out.
