Michigan Bans Numbing Creams for Tattoos: What You Need to Know
As a person who has her fair share of tattoos, I can say that I've never even thought about asking for a numbing cream or spray when sitting down to get inked. However, many people do - especially when getting tattoos in areas known to be particularly painful.

Unfortunately for those who prefer to be numbed up, that's no longer an option in tattoo parlors across Michigan.
Numbing Creams and Sprays for Tattoos Banned in Michigan
A recent post on Facebook from Ink Station Tattoo in Battle Creek caught my eye. In the post, the folks from Ink Station said
As of September 11, 2025, numbing cream and sprays are no longer allowed in Michigan before or during a tattoo appt. If you come in for your appt and have numbing cream on your skin we will have to reschedule you.

At first, I was skeptical, because I hadn't heard anything about this, but it turns out that it's true.
Per Michigan's Body Art Facilities Rules Mich Admin Code, R 333.13101 – R 333.13118, tattoo artists in Michigan can no longer give you a tattoo if you have already put on a numbing agent before your appointment. (Unless whatever you used was prescribed by your doctor specifically to be used during "body art procedures.")
Additionally, numbing creams and sprays can not be applied by your artist unless they have been prescribed by a doctor who practices medicine in Michigan.
If you have received a prescription, you must provide documentation to prove it, and your artist must keep that documentation on file.
