Michigan Man Faces Terrorism Charges For Trying To Stop Repo With Bomb
A bizarre incident unfolded in Harrison Township, Michigan, where a 45-year-old man, Robert Fitz, attempted to prevent his car from being repossessed by rigging it to look like a bomb.
Fitz's elaborate scheme involved placing propane tanks inside his vehicle and attaching wires that connected to the car's console, creating a scene that alarmed neighbors and prompted police intervention.
Michigan Man Trying To Stop A Repo Didn't Think Things Through
On Tuesday morning, local authorities received reports of a suspicious vehicle.
Upon arrival, they discovered a propane tank in the passenger seat and another tank strapped to the driver's side wheel, complete with copper wiring running beneath the car.
To further deter anyone from approaching, Fitz displayed a sign in the windshield that read, "Don't move car. It will blow up."
This prompted the Macomb County Sheriff's Office to evacuate nearby homes and call in the Michigan State Police Bomb Squad.
Fortunately, the bomb squad quickly determined that the setup was a hoax, posing no real threat.
However, Fitz was arrested and now faces serious charges, including making a false report or threatening terrorism, which could lead to a 20-year prison sentence, and a felony charge for using explosives to intimidate, carrying a potential five-year sentence.
Neigbhors were allowed to return home after about 90 minutes, but the incident left many shaken.
Fitz's desperate attempt to save his vehicle ultimately failed, as it was towed away regardless of his misguided efforts.
