Mitchell O’Brien and Breanne Sika were walking along the Reynolds Street Beach in Leland enjoy the nice day and looking for Leland bluestones.
While walking along the beach, Mitchell took a step, and his leg began to sink into the sand.
Do Michigan Beaches Have Quicksand?
When I heard about this, I said to myself, "Wait...Do Michigan beaches actually have quicksand?"
Turns out Michigan beaches can have quicksand, particularly near creek mouths or in areas affected by flooding or dredging, which is exactly what happened in this case.
Dredging equipment was being used to removing 60,000 cubic yards of sand to help build-up the Van’s and Reynolds Street public beaches.
Mitchell and Breanne were walking near that area and noticed that the sand looked a little wet but had no clue that it was so dangerous or that it could suck him in.
Mitchell didn't panic and tried to remove himself from the quicksand.
After 15 minutes had gone by he realized he was going to need some help so he and Breanne called 911.
Eventually after dealing with issues of not getting service they both were able to get through to 911 and that call ending up defining their relationship.
Mitchell and Breanne who are coworkers were kind of dating but nothing was official telling Mlive:
“We both get through at the same time, And I just go, ‘I think my girlfriend’s trying to call, too.’ And she, at the same time, about 20 feet away, says, ‘my boyfriend is stuck in the sand.’”
that quick conversation made things official.
What To Do In Quicksand
If you ever find yourself in a situation involving quicksand you should calmly try freeing yourself by gently kicking your legs back and forth.
This should loosen the dense sand around you, allowing you to pull yourself free slowly.
I'm so happy everything turned out great in the end and of course congratulations to the new couple!
If this leads to marriage, you two might want to avoid a beach wedding—just saying
