For most people, buying a home is the biggest purchase of their entire life.

In recent years, the price of homes in Michigan has been going up and up.

According to Zillow, the average home in Michigan now costs around $241,165, which is a 4.7% increase from the year before.

With prices rising and no sign of them coming down anytime soon, there is something potential new homebuyers can do to save a lot of money.

New Michigan Home Trend Saving Owners Up To $20,000

A new cost saving trend that some new home builders are doing across the country and right here in Michigan is designing homes without a basement.

When I first heard about this, I thought it was a crazy idea.

If you don't have a basement, where are you going to store all your stuff?

I know in my house we've been doing a great job of decluttering and getting rid of things we don't need or use, but our basement is still full of Christmas decorations and camping gear.

But the thought of saving up to $20,000 definitely would make me consider getting rid of some of of those things and not having a basement.

Now if these new homes don't have a basement, where do things like a furnace and water heater go?

According to Fox 17, these things that would normally be located in the basement instead go under the stairs that lead to the second floor of the home.

The more I think about this money-saving idea, the better it sounds.

Don't get me wrong, I would love to have a man cave in the basement where I could watch the Lions with my buddies, but if I only need the basement for storage, like I currently use it, I could easily store all that stuff in a garage or a shed in the backyard.
