Michigan Bow-Fisher Shoots Massive Koi Fish Weighing Almost 25lbs
A Michigan bowfishing team has made an unexpected catch in Glen Lake, reeling in a massive 24.5-pound koi fish that may set a world record.
The giant orange fish, measuring 32 inches in length, was one of four koi removed from the lake as part of an effort to combat this invasive species.
The Glen Lake Association initiated this unique approach after receiving increasing reports of strange, orange fish in the water over the past six years.
Concerned about the potential impact on the lake's ecosystem, they hired bowfishers from Thundering Aspens Sportsman Club in Mesick to tackle the problem.
Koi, originally from Japan, are popular ornamental fish often kept in ponds and aquariums.
However, when released into natural water bodies, they can become invasive, competing with native species for resources and disrupting the local ecosystem.
The record-breaking koi was a pre-spawn female, and three of the four fish removed were pregnant.
One female koi can produce up to a million eggs during spawning.

Rob Kerner, watershed biologist for the association, estimates the koi were about six or seven years old based on microscopic examination of their scales.
The association believes there may still be a few koi in the lake and plans to continue their eradication efforts.
I wonder if bow fisher that snagged the massive koi decided to keep and mount it.
