Comedian and actor Marc Maron might be known for his sharp takes and brutally honest commentary, but on the latest episode of his long-running podcast 'WTF with Marc Maron' (episode #1634), he took a break from the doom and gloom to gush (yes, gush) about how much he enjoyed his time in Grand Rapids.

After opening with a typically heavy dose of political despair, Maron suddenly pivoted to say: “What I can talk about that is good,” he says, "I can talk about Grand Rapids, what a pleasant city. What nice people.”

Well, that's not the take we're used to hearing. But hey, we'll take a compliment any time.

He then goes on to say that he was captivated by our historic brick buildings in downtown.  He says he appreciates that the overall vibe of downtown is that we are the kind of city that has lovingly restored our history instead of replacing it with new and boring architecture.

For Maron, the brick we have in downtown GR is more than just aesthetic, it’s a sign of life being given back to the city. And we choose to love it instead of replacing it, which is honestly pretty magical.

Then came what might be the highest compliment of all: he gave a review of one of the best coffees he’s ever had, that came from Lantern Coffee Bar & Lounge. He even calls it “f--king amazing.” (The Lantern is my favorite too, he made a great call to give Jon and Miles a shot.)

Maron also praised the venue he played on Friday, April 11th, GLC Live at 20 Monroe. He noted how great the sound quality was and urged folks who live in or near Grand Rapids to “go enjoy a show at that venue.”

He wrapped his brief Grand Rapids lovefest by saying he likes to focus his energy on things that bring him joy—and clearly, we made the list. If you want to hear it for yourself, it starts at the 8:00 mark of the episode.
