I had something happening to me when I had to make a quick run to the store to grab some things my wife Lindsey needed. While checking out the woman ringing up my items asked for my ID and I was confused as to why she needed to see it.

After I asked her why she needed to check my ID she explained and while I felt like it was kind of silly I understand she was just doing her job and I went on with my day. But for some reason, I couldn't stop thinking about that moment and I had to figure out why she need to see my ID for what I bought.

Why Did She Need To See My ID?

So on Saturday, my wife Lindsey was preparing ingredients for chili that she was going to make in the crockpot. She had to use the bathroom real quick and when she came back our garbage can of a dog Benny had eaten 1/2 a pound of spicy Italian sausage that was still inside the package on the counter. So while out running errands she asked me to please pick up some more meat. I went to the nearest store which was a Family Fare Supermarket on Fulton Street.

I ran inside and grabbed 1lb of Italian pork sausage and some command hooks. While walking towards the checkout lines I spotted some lighters on sale and remember we needed to grab a new one so I grabbed it and got in the 10 items or less line, when it was my turn the woman rang me up, and when she scanned the big lighter for candles and asked for my ID. I was confused until she explained that in Michigan you can't buy tobacco or tobacco products unless you're 21 or older.

Michigan Minimum Age To Buy Tobacco Products Goes From 18 To 21

Earlier this summer Governor Gretchen Whitmer signed a new law raising the age to buy tobacco products in Michigan from 18 to 21. I'm not sure how old I look to most people but I'm a big, bald dude with a beard so I'm guessing closer to 40 than 21. In Michigan, Tobacco products include Cigarettes, E-Cigarettes, Smokeless Tobacoo, Hookah, Cigars, Cigarillos, Little Cigars, and Disovalbe Products. You can get more info about them at Michigan.org

Is A Lighter Considered A Tobacco Product In Michigan?

According to Michigan Law, a lighter is not a tobacco product even though it is one way to consume a tobacco product. So why did the lady need to see my ID? turns out some stores in Michigan and across the country have a policy that considers lighters to also be a tobacco product and therefore if you want to purchase it you must be of age and present a proper ID.

I'm not sure if I'm the only person in West Michigan that didn't know this but I wanted to share so that if you have this happen next time you're in line buying a lighter you will know why they're asking to see your ID.

I understand why they wanted to check my ID but some of these Laws on the books in Michigan make absolutely no sense, Check them out.
