If you've been to a big city in America, you might have noticed that some places let you take your drinks in a plastic cup so you can enjoy it while walking to your next destination.

I still remember visiting friends who lived in Austin, Texas, and having my mind blown that I could carry my beer with me on a city sidewalk in certain social districts.

The City of Grand Rapids embraced the idea of social districts for the first time back in 2020.

Five years later and there are now close to 70 different business that have taken part.

Are Grand Rapids Social Districts a Bad Idea?

While I enjoy the idea of taking my gin & tonic or craft beer with me as I enjoy the city I love so much, I do understand why some people might have second thoughts about social districts.

According to WZZM 13, Grand Rapids newly elected Mayor David LaGrand asked a meeting on Tuesday morning if this will create a public order issue with more people drinking in public spaces.

City officials said there hasn't been an increase or uptick in that type of behavior.

Where Are The New Social Districts In Grand Rapids?

These are where the 3 new social districts will be located:

  • Ottawa Avenue NW, from Mason Street to Walbridge Street
  • West Riverwalk from Bridge Street to 6th Street Bridge, including 6th Street Bridge
  • East Riverwalk from 555 Monroe Avenue to Michigan Street
