Did You Know It’s Illegal To Have A Snowball Fight In This Part Of Grand Rapids?
Snowball fights are a right of passage for all kids once the wintertime starts.
It never occurred to me that some children don't get to experience snowball fights because of laws within their cities.
There are even cities in Michigan that have banned all snowball fights.
Houghton
Within the city of Houghton, the ordinance insists that people are prohibited from throwing...
...any snowball, missile or object towards any person, moving vehicle or building.
In order to enforce this ban that the city has, there are fines for anyone who is seen throwing a snowball. You pay $50 the first time you are caught.
A simple little snowball can cause this much havoc...
What a shame.
Big Rapids
Back in 2019, the Ferris State Torch reported that the city limits can be an issue for students and locals.
In Big Rapids' Code of Ordinances,
no person shall drop, throw, deposit, or scatter any earth, ashes, shavings, sawdust, hay, dirt, manure, rubbish, garbage, filth, or any other loose material or articles in any street, alley, or public place...
Armada
The town of Armada seems like they are not a fan of snow.
If people violate this law in Armada, a person can get a $500 fine or up to 90 days in jail.
In their Code of Ordinances Sec. 91-31, there are specific rules against snowball, specifically for automobiles.
No person within the village shall wrongfully throw or propel or extend any snowball, missile, or other object from any moving automobile or propel any snowball, missile, or object toward any automobile.
If someone throws a snowball or anything else at an automobile, there are some repercussions.
An individual who throws, propels, or drops a snowball, missile, or other dangerous object at an automobile but does not cause any property damage shall be guilty of a misdemeanor punishable by imprisonment for not more than ninety-three days or a fine of not more than one hundred dollars or both. In the event of damage or injury, the offense shall be prosecutable as a higher-level misdemeanor or felony as provided by state law.
East Grand Rapids
If you are in East Grand Rapids, you may not want to have a spontaneous snowball fight either.
According to Ordinance for East Grand Rapids,
§ 9.62 WEAPONS OFFENSES (D):
Wrongfully throw or propel any snowball, paintball, missile, air-soft pellet or object from any moving vehicle or toward any person, vehicle or property of another.
