A Record-Breaking Crowd in Detroit Proves the City Needs a Women’s Hockey Team
Detroit has once again shown why it’s one of America’s best hockey towns by reclaiming its own title and setting a new U.S. attendance record for women’s professional hockey.
On March 16, 2025, a crowd of 14,288 packed Little Caesars Arena to watch the Minnesota Frost take on the New York Sirens. Which officially beats the previous record of 14,018, set in Denver, Colorado just two months ago. The best part? The previous record before that was taken away from Detroit.

This isn’t the first time Detroit has made history in women’s hockey. In 2024, the city set a record with 13,736 fans in attendance, proving that there’s a huge appetite for the sport here. With the PWHL currently made up of six teams and looking to expand, Detroit is making a strong case for why it deserves a team of its own.
Fans who showed up for the record-breaking night were treated to an exciting game, with the New York Sirens defeating the Minnesota Frost 4-1.

But more than that, the turnout sent a clear message: Detroit is ready to fully embrace professional women’s hockey. So, why don’t we have a team yet? It seems there are rumors it might happen eventually.
And as a Pistons fan, I can point out (with pain) that most of their games aren't exactly packed these days. So, how can you say there isn't an audience in the city who wants to make this hockey franchise happen?
With each record-breaking game being held by other teams at LCA, Detroit continues to build its case as the perfect home for a PWHL expansion team. If this kind of support keeps up, it’s only a matter of time before pro women’s hockey becomes a permanent part of the city’s already legendary sports scene.
