We’ve all had a rough start on a travel day. For whatever reason, you’re racing to the gate, dragging your suitcase behind you, silently praying that the airline is running late just like you.

Maybe you’re texting the group chat dramatic updates like, “Tell my kids I love them”, or praying that you don’t end up with a person who uses six trays to get through TSA. But one guy decided to raise the stakes just a bit too high.

A 23-year-old man who planned to fly out of Detroit Metro Airport (DTW) missed his Spirit Airlines flight to Los Angeles on Thursday did the unthinkable... he called in a bomb threat.

Why? Because this goofball missed his flight and thought that maybe, just maybe, grounding the plane for a few hours might get him back on board. You know, because that’s how it works. (I wish I were joking.)

Authorities say he made the call to delay the flight, hoping the extra time would magically reverse the clock. Instead, what followed was a six-hour delay, a full-plane evacuation, passengers being screened again, and a visit from the FBI.

Oh and the best part of all of it, the guy who called it in still didn’t make it to LA.

The flight, which was supposed to leave DTW at 8:36 that morning, was cleared after a thorough investigation and eventually departed without the threat maker.

FBI investigators traced the threat through phone records and arrested the man later that same day when he came back to the airport trying to catch another flight. (I can’t decide if that’s bold or just plain clueless.)

To be clear, everyone was safe. Passengers were bussed over to the Evans Terminal, TSA and emergency teams did their jobs like pros, and thankfully, there was no actual danger. But come on. A bomb threat? Just to make a Spirit flight?

So yeah, while it’s hard not to shake your head and laugh at the sheer audacity of it all, it’s also serious. The passengers deserved better. The crew and first responders didn’t need that stress. And let’s be honest based on my experience, Spirit Airlines delays flights all the time on their own. No need to call in a fake emergency.
