Fall on Hold? Michigan’s Extended Summer May Last Into October
Last week, I was pulling sweatshirts and leggings out of the closet, ready to fully lean into cozy season.
This week? I’m digging my shorts and sandals back out like it’s July. If you live in Michigan, you already know this back and forth, moody, in-between season weather is nothing new. But let me tell you, it feels especially dramatic right now.
I got a fancy fall flavored coffee, what do you mean it's 80 outside again?
Even though the official start of fall is September 22, Mother Nature clearly didn’t get the memo. Instead of pumpkin spice temps, we’re getting mid-80s heat, sunshine, and the kind of humidity that makes you want to find the nearest lake.
And according to meteorologists, this isn’t just a quick warm-up. Models are showing that we’re locked into this summer-like stretch well into October. So, don’t even think about packing away your tank tops yet. (Unless you’re like the woman I saw pushing through the heat in the sweater yesterday. That’s a dedication to the calendar I’m not willing to commit to.)
It’s all being caused by a high-pressure ridge that’s currently sitting over Canada. It’s keeping the warmth parked right over us, like a big Canadian blanket.
Forecasts show we’ll stay well into the 70s, with some days hitting the 80s through at least October 2. So I guess that’s great news for a few last backyard BBQs and late night ice cream runs. Not so great, however, for my fall girlie wardrobe dreams.
What’s less fun is the growing drought concern. Aside from a small chance of rain Monday (maybe a quarter to half-inch if we’re lucky) there’s not much relief in sight. That’s worrisome for farms, lawns, and anyone tired of watering their mums.
So, while the calendar says fall, Michigan says summer part two. My advice? Keep the sweaters on standby for chilly nights, but don’t put away your flip-flops just yet.
This season’s fashion forecast is all about layering (and a little patience) while we wait for sweater weather to stick finally.
