Bird Flu Outbreak Found In West Michigan County
A new case of bird flu has been detected in West Michigan.

You've probably heard of how deadly it can be to livestock, but did you know it can spread to other animals and in some cases to humans as well?
Let's look into where bird flu has been found in West Michigan and what you should do if you're exposed.
Bird Flu Detected In Allegan County
The Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development said in a press release that an outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) has been detected in a backyard flock in Allegan County with around 50 birds.
What Is Bird Flu
Bird flu, also known as avian influenza, is a disease caused by a type of influenza virus that primarily infects birds.
While bird flu is naturally found in wild bird populations, it can also spread to domesticated poultry, and in rare cases, to other animals like dairy cows and even humans.
Dangers of Bird Flu
There are several big reasons why bird flu is so dangerous.
It's bad for animals: Certain types of bird flu can quickly kill entire flocks of birds.
This is devastating for farmers and can disrupt the supply of food.
It's jumping to new species: The virus is now infecting more animals than before, including dairy cows.
When the virus jumps to a new species, it has a chance to change and become more dangerous.
It could pose a risk to people: The biggest worry is that the virus could mutate and learn to spread easily from person to person.
