If you’ve been a parent in Michigan over the past few years, you know school safety has been on everyone’s mind. From lockdown drills to buzzer entry systems, districts are trying just about everything to protect kids.

Now, one Michigan school district is taking it a step further by putting artificial intelligence to work.

Mason County Central Schools is starting to roll out the use of ZeroEyes, a high-tech system that uses AI to spot guns on the school’s existing security cameras.

How does AI Gun detection software work?

The software was developed after the Parkland tragedy in 2018, when security footage was only useful after the fact. The idea was simple but powerful: if cameras are already everywhere, why not make them smart enough to detect a weapon before anyone gets hurt?

The program is simple: If ZeroEyes spots what looks like a firearm, the alert doesn’t just sit in a database. A team of trained professionals reviews the footage in real time.

If it really is a gun, law enforcement and school officials are immediately notified. That head start could mean the difference between a close call and something far worse.

While it obviously can’t recognize things it can’t see, it’s still an incredible step in the right direction to try to keep students safe.

For Mason County Central, this is all possible thanks to state grants dedicated to improving school security. But they’re not the first to use the ZeroEyes technology.

It’s already being used in hospitals and even places of worship, showing how communities across the country are leaning on AI to prevent violence before it starts.

No system is perfect, but this feels like a big step toward giving parents, teachers, and kids a little more peace of mind.
