U.P. Sees Surge In Bug Activity This Summer
Michigan's Upper Peninsula is a beautiful place, but this summer, there's an overwhelming surge in bug activity.
Summer in the Upper Peninsula
Most Michiganders refer to the Upper Peninsula as "God's Country." It is one of the most beautiful places in the world with Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, Tahquamenon Falls State Park, Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park, Mackinac Island, and Isle Royale National Park, to name a few.
Like many places in the United States, some times of the year are better than others to visit certain locations, depending on the season. In the Upper Peninsula, it's bug season with blackflies, deerflies, gnats, mosquitoes, ticks, and more.

Don't let the bugs stop you, just plan accordingly and enjoy the U.P.

Wind plays a part in the bug problems in the U.P., and sometimes it can be your friend.
Many bug sprays, like Off, are not enough when you go to the U.P. The suggestion of "Native Sisters Don't Bug Me Body Butter" is a great tip from a Yooper.

Permethrin is another great suggestion. If you're planning a trip to the U.P. this summer, Yoopers have shared more effective bug deterrents in this Reddit thread.
