Sports fans will often give nicknames to opposing teams fans and that is how the term "cheesehead" was born. Wisconsin is known in the United States for its cheese industry so it was a natural leap for sports fans in Illinois to refer to sports fans in Wisconsin as cheeseheads.
Ralph Bruno was a Milwaukee Brewers fan who invented the first cheesehead hat in 1987. Sports Fans Now Have an Answer for the Cheesehead
My boys and I were watching the Detroit Lions beat the Green Bay Packers in Green Bay last Sunday and every time you saw any crowd shots fans were often wearing the cheesehead hat.
Not to be outdone by the cheesehead hat, Chicago Bears fan Jeran Dahlquist invented the "Graterhead" hat in 2013. Several NFL teams have taken this souvenir hat idea and made it work for their team when playing against the Green Bay Packers.
The Lions play the Packers at home the first week of December so if you want to sport a Graterhead hat to remind opposing fans what will happen to their team during the game you may want to act fast. I couldn't find one in the Lions merch shop online which doesn't mean you can't get one at the game.
I found a Graterhead hat on Walmart's website for $29.99 and it's probably much cheaper than a stadium version. It shouldn't be too hard to find a Lions sticker to put on it and save you a few bucks for an extra stadium beer.
