The Dollar Store Concept

There were 5 & 10 Cent stores like Rexall, Ben Franklins, Perry, and others when I was a kid. As I grew up those stores slowly faded away and were replaced with Dollar Stores.

The dollar-type stores were the same concept as the 5 & 10 Cent stores, small-format general merchandise store that sells products at low prices.

Dollar Store Boom

It was around the mid-1980s when dollar-type stores began opening. Dollar Tree has since when from 5 stores to over 16,000.

There are around 8,200 Family Dollar stores but this company has only been around since 2015 and is owned by the owners of Dollar Tree.

Dollar General has been around longer than Dollar Tree and Family Dollar, which started in 1939 when it was called J.L. Turner and Son but changed its name to Dollar General in 1955. There are now nearly 19,000 Dollar General locations in 2023.

What County in Michigan Doesn't Have a Dollar General?

There seems to be a Dollar General everywhere I go in Michigan. I live in the middle of nowhere in Newaygo County and there is a Dollar General down the road, another 7 miles away, and another 12 miles away. Dollar General is everywhere except in one county of Michigan.

There are Dollar Generals all over West Michigan, a few dozen in Detroit and according to MLive, there is even a Dollar Store in Michigan's smallest county of Keweenaw with a population of around 2,000 people. So what county doesn't have a Dollar General?

It turns out that the only county in Michigan that doesn't have a Dollar General is Leelanau County. People from the area Chamber of Commerce did think the store would be good for area local businesses.
