This Michigan Mini Golf Island Is a Hidden Gem You’ve Got to See to Believe
Golf season is in full swing, and if you're a Michigander, you already know the Mitten State is packed with great places to hit the links. But have you ever played a course that’s literally its own island?
Tucked away in Mt. Pleasant, there’s a one-of-a-kind mini golf experience that’s as fun as it is unexpected. It’s called Short Game Island, and it’s part of Buck’s Run Golf Course.
What Makes Short Game Island So Unique?
This isn’t your average putt-putt setup. For one, it’s made entirely of natural grass—one of only three of its kind in the entire state. Even cooler? It sits right in the middle of a lake and is accessible by footbridge.
Here's a look at Short Game Island from above.

They’ve even made a few upgrades to make your visit better—each hole now has its own flag for easier aiming, and drink holders have been added at the start of every hole. Cheers to that!
A Quarry Turned Into a Golf Paradise
And the story of how this place came to be? Just as cool. The 290-acre property was once a bustling sand, gravel, and stone quarry owned by the Fisher family since the 1950s.
After mining operations shut down in the ’90s, the land sat unused—until the Fishers brought in renowned course designer Jerry Matthews.

He transformed the central mining quarry into what’s now Lake Fisher and designed a golf course that flows beautifully with the landscape, including nearly two miles of Chippewa River frontage and multiple lakes.
Buck’s Run officially opened to the public in 2000—and Short Game Island is still one of its most unique features.
If you're looking to try something different this summer, this little island escape might just be your next favorite golf stop!
