Two Michigan Inns Just Named Best Historic B&Bs in America
Sometimes the best getaways are the ones that feel like a step back in time. Imagine waking up in a grand old home, sunlight spilling through vintage windows, the scent of a homemade breakfast wafting from the kitchen—yet with every modern comfort within reach. Michigan, it turns out, does this kind of escape very well.
Two Mitten State inns were just crowned the No. 1 and No. 2 best historic bed and breakfasts in the entire country!

In fact, this isn’t the first time Michigan has shined in the bed-and-breakfast world. Earlier this year, two other Michigan inns—both in Saugatuck—were voted among the ten best in the nation in a separate USA Today 10Best poll. Now, Michigan is once again taking top honors—this time in a new ranking that focuses on historic properties.

Newsweek’s list of the Best Historic Bed and Breakfasts in the U.S. highlights inns where history and hospitality meet: stately old homes restored to their former glory while offering modern touches like whirlpool tubs, gourmet breakfasts, and even keyless entry. From seaside retreats to sprawling estates, these destinations promise charm, comfort, and a rich sense of place.
So which Michigan spots took home the top two honors?
Laurium Manor Inn, in the heart of the Keweenaw Peninsula, claimed the No. 1 spot. Built in 1908 by wealthy copper mine owners, this 13,000-square-foot, four-story mansion once stood as the most elegant home in the Western Upper Peninsula.

Guests today are treated to rare details like a silver-leaf domed ceiling and elephant leather wall coverings, all while enjoying a full breakfast buffet. Additional accommodations are available at Victorian Hall, a 1906 brick-and-sandstone mansion with eight bedrooms, six ornately carved fireplaces, Tiffany-style stained glass, and intricate crown moldings.
The current owners have spent more than three decades lovingly restoring Laurium Manor after purchasing it in 1989. Once stripped of its architectural elements and left in disrepair, the mansion has been gradually transformed back into a showpiece—just a mile from Keweenaw National Historical Park and the charming village of Calumet, and a short drive from Copper Harbor and the Houghton-Hancock area.
Right behind it at No. 2 is Ludington’s Cartier Mansion. The neoclassical beauty was built in 1905, and features Roman-pressed brick, stately columns, crystal chandeliers, claw-foot tubs, and modern conveniences.
The property also includes the inviting Carriage House and Ludington House. Each of the 18 guest rooms is designed to feel like your own private retreat. You’ll find a private bathroom in every room, plush bedding to sink into, individual climate control, and plenty of little luxuries to make your stay extra special. There's even a "butler" on-site. Here's Carson, the Tibetan Spaniel who "works" at the inn.
Shopping and dining are nearby in Ludington's quaint downtown, along with gorgeous stretches of beach on Lake Michigan. Ludington was actually recently voted the No. 4 best small historic town in the U.S.
With two Michigan inns topping the list, it’s clear the state has truly perfected the art of historic hospitality.
