Is it Goodbye or See You Later? Grand Rapids’ Maggie’s Kitchen Closes ‘Until Further Notice’
If you tried to grab a meal at a beloved restaurant on Bridge Street over the weekend, you were met with a bittersweet scene: long lines, emotional goodbyes, and local regulars rushing to grab one last order of barbacoa before it ran out.
Maggie's Kitchen Shuts Down on Grand Rapids West Side
Maggie’s Kitchen, a cherished institution on Grand Rapids Westside officially wrapped up service on Saturday, August 29 after more than four decades in business.
In a statement shared on social media just a day prior, the owners explained that they needed to pause operations to focus on personal family matters:
"Tomorrow, Saturday August 29th, 2026, will be the last day we are open for service, until further notice. We need to focus on our family for the time being and would appreciate our community's support during this time."

Owners not elaborate on the closure more, but did say they would share updates as they are able and thanked the community for its support.

Four Decades of Westside History
Maggie Garcia first opened the counter-service spot at 636 Bridge St NW in the early 80s.The restaurant grew into a multi-generational family operation alongside Louis, Gabriela, and the rest of the crew. Long before Bridge Street turned into a bustling dining corridor, Maggie's was already a Westside staple, built on local favorites like huevos rancheros, breakfast burritos, menudo, machaca, tamales, and authentic barbacoa.

Following the announcement, dozens of longtime customers shared memories of visiting the restaurant as children with their parents and grandparents. For many locals, it has been the go-to spot for authentic Mexican food in Grand Rapids for four decades.

"Until Further Notice": A Ray of Hope for Regulars
While the sudden closure leaves a gap on Bridge Street, the family's note specified that the break is "until further notice." Regulars are holding out hope that after taking time for family, the doors might open once again.
