Development projects in downtown Grand Rapids have been the talk of the town this year. The Grand Rapids Public Museum is in the midst of a $50 million expansion, and multiple riverfront projects including Lyon Square and bringing the rapids back to GR, there will soon be a new soccer stadium (a first for the area), housing projects including a potential new skyline for the city, and so much more.

But perhaps the project drumming up the most excitement is the project that has already broken ground: a riverfront outdoor amphitheater. Though the theater won't open until 2026, GR residents already know who they'll purchase tickets from for the next 25 years.

Live Nation, which owns or controls 60 of the top 100 amphitheaters in the U.S., has been approved by the  Convention Arean Authority (CAA) committee in charge of the amphitheater as the exclusive promoter for the Acrisure Amphitheater for the next 25 years. That is a very long time for a building that isn't even built yet.

According to mLive, the reason the CAA approved Live Nation so early was because of the "good partner" that Live Nation has been for the Van Andel Arena for the past 20 years. Live Nation is the promoter for GLC Live @ 20 Monroe as well, making three of the largest venues in Grand Rapids in deals with Live Nation.

The news of the 25-year approval was met with criticism from Grand Rapids residents. Users on the r/grandrapids subreddit have had an overwhelmingly negative response, with the top 8 comments on a thread reacting to the news all expressing dissatisfaction with the news.

Live Nation is currently facing a monopoly lawsuit, and if the lawsuit finds Ticketmaster (which owns Live Nation) to be a monopoly, the CAA would be able to back out of the 25-year deal.
