I have been to the Michigan State Fair several times but never knew about one of the most popular attractions the "Butter Cow" carved from hundreds of pounds of butter.
Michigan State Fair 2024
Growing up in Michigan, attending the state fair was a must as a kid. The rides, the fair food, the animals, and the entertainment are all fun for the whole family plus you learn stuff about your state.
The Michigan State Fair occurs at the Suburban Collection Showplace in Novi from August 29 through September 2. Because the fair lands on Labor Day weekend it will last a bonus day that includes the Detroit Shrine Circus, a bigger midway with more rides and Carnival treats. Plus, all the agricultural and livestock exhibits. To get tickets and save a little money click here.
I have been to the Michigan State Fair many times but there is a legendary attraction that is so big it has its own social media accounts.

The Legend of the Michigan State Fair's "Butter Cow"
Yes, a cow carved from butter, is made here in Michigan from local cows. For decades the "Butter Cow" has been a major attraction for Michiganders.
A woman who goes by Rachel is the sculptor of the Butter Cow and its Butter Calf.
There is a tradition each year that the breeds of cow and calf change to cover all the different dairy breeds found in Michigan.
It takes hundreds of pounds of butter for the sculptor to create the cow, the calf, and a goat or two. Thanks to C.F. Burger Creamery who sponsors the event and that sculptor Rachel has all the butter she needs to create these masterpieces.
When you attend the Michigan State Fair this year add the tradition of visiting the "Butter Cow" display. For all Michigan State Fair information click here.
