Get Your Passports Ready: Lions Have An International Game In 2026
While soccer has long been dubbed the world's game because of how many countries around the world are invested in the sport, football, ahem, sorry, American football has mainly been a sport played in the United States.

But the National Football League (NFL) has been aggressively working to change that, with this season featuring not just the most games abroad (7) but also seeing games in continents that the NFL hasn't been to before. This year saw 6.2 million average viewers for the International Games
The Detroit Lions have become one of the most hyped and talked about teams in the NFL ever since the Dan Campbell era began, with their franchise-best season last year driving record-sales numbers (and viewership numbers) over the best couple of years.
So it isn't all that surprising that the Lions will play a game overseas next season to bring their franchise-driving hype to a new legion of fans. The question is: where will they play?
Officially, No One Knows. However...
Officially, a destination for the game has not been announced. However, there are a few potential landing spots for the Lions.
- The Lions abroad twice, both times in London. They are 1-1, beating the Falcons on a Matt Prater game-winning kick in 2014 and getting destroyed by the Chiefs in 2015. Multiple London games take place each year.
- We know for a fact that a game will be played in Germany in 2026 and 2028. There is a leading belief that this will be where the Lions play because Amon-Ra St. Brown is fluent in German and popular there.
- We also know that the NFL will play its first-ever regular-season game in Australia, with the Los Angeles Rams confirmed as the home team.
- The Lions playing in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, seems the least likely of the confirmed cities.
Personally, it would be cool to see them outside of London. But nothing will be known for sure until the NFL confirms the schedule sometime next year. Either way, don't be surprised if the Lions get priority booking.
