A woman enjoying the scenery at Belle Isle spotted a live alligator basking in the sun.. The woman snapped a few photos and video, which the Michigan Department of Natural Resources confirmed to be a true alligator sighting.

The alligator spotted last week at Belle Isle Park was not particularly large, but no one has reported missing one in the Detroit area. So where did this reptile come from? For now, the owner of the alligator will remain a mystery. Is there a penalty for releasing an alligator in Michigan?

The reason we will probably never know who released the alligator at Belle Isle Park is that there are legal penalties for carrying out such an act in Michigan. Releasing an exotic pet is considered a misdemeanor, punishable by a fine of up to $1,000 and 93 days or more in jail.

A woman was kayaking at Belle Isle Park last Sunday when she discovered a small alligator lying in the sun. She captured pictures and video and turned them over to the DNR.

According to Fox 2, Steven Hart and Troy Keteyian had been searching for the alligator at Belle Isle Park, but had never met. Hart spent four hours searching for the gator and found it, but hadn't captured it.

Keteyian showed up at the perfect time and helped Hart net the gator.

The alligator was later transported to the Great Lakes Serpentarium, where she will now be safe from the winter weather and have a place to call home.
