The U.P. ‘Town’ That Has Zero Official Population
Brevort, Michigan, has no official borders or population, yet it’s filled with history, lodging, and legendary smoked fish.
Where is Brevort Located?
If you are unfamiliar with the township of Brevort, Michigan, it's about 19 miles from St. Ignace on U.S. 2 heading west after crossing the Mackinac Bridge. I have driven by Brevport several times, heading to my friend Curt’s house in Iron River.
When you don't live in this area, you drive through thinking Brevort is like any other small town in Michigan. You see the road signs, as well as signage for Brevort Lake, the township is close to Mackinac Island, Tahquamenon Falls State Park, and the Cut River Bridge.

Brevort, Michigan, Has No Legal Boundaries or Official Population
Brevort (pronounced BREE-vhrt) is an unincorporated community with no legally defined boundaries or population statistics. Brevort was named after explorer Henry Brevort in 1845, and was settled as a fishing community in 1884.
Since Brevort is unincorporated, it is not required to file for the census, but some people live in the community. Despite having businesses and residents, Brevort officially has no recorded population. Below are some folks who had plenty to say about Brevort on Facebook.
With the last name Gustafson, Jody probably has knowledge of the smoked fish her family is famous for. The name Gustafson dates back to 1867 in the community when Charles Gustafson settled there.
Rebecca hit the nail on the head with the Pasties in Moran. I stopped there on my way back from bear hunting last October, and that hit the spot. State 51 does offer an excellent breakfast. I have stopped twice when crossing the Upper Peninsula.

You know if a "Karen" approves of Brevort, it must be a great place to live.
