Every time we turn out heads there is another scam to be on the lookout for, it's becoming quite exhausting to try and keep up with all of them. Most of them are texts that involve a link or are calls where someone is trying to gain access to your personal information or bank accounts. Another very common scam is email phishing scams. Phishing scams are very similar to text scams as they normally prompt you to click on a link or send a response to the email. The worst thing you can do is click this link or reply to the email as this will install a bug or virus onto your device that will give the scammer access to everything.

The FBI is back with another warning this time for those people in Michigan who use Gmail and Outlook for their email services. The FBI said users of these platforms need to be aware of the Medusa hacking organization. They have been active since 2021 and have victims in the following fields:

  • medical
  • education
  • legal
  • insurance
  • technology
  • manufacturing

They have currently already affected over 300 victims using a phishing campaign. They once again, get the victim to click on a link or share personal information. Once they gain access to the device or information, they will hold it hostage until they are paid a ransom, hence the term ransomware attack.

The FBI and U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency encourage users to use long and unique passwords along with multistep verification to keep themselves safe. They also recommend that all operating systems, software and firmware stay up to date among other recommendations to stay away from scams.
