Police are saying that a teenager who died in an accident late Wednesday night was sending and receiving text messages just before the crash occurred.

The crash around 10:45 p.m. on Eighth Avenue north of Lincoln Street, near Marne.

Jacob Daniel Freybler, 17, from Grand Rapids, was driving southbound on 8th Avenue when he crossed the center line of the road and hit a SUV head-on.

The driver of the SUV suffered broken bones and other injuries, but his passenger was not injured. Freybler was pronounced dead at the scene.
