On Wednesday night, Hank & Cheryl Makarewicz pledged a gift of $1 million to West Catholic High School in Grand Rapids.

The donation will go towards a state-of-the-art academic learning center and a new entrance.

The surprise announcement was made at Wednesday night’s Falcon Awards Gala at West Catholic High School.

The donation from Hank & Cheryl Makarewicz goes towards phase two of a five-year fundraising campaign with a goal of $2 million for capital improvements. Roughly $2 million was raised during phase one of the campaign with all funds allocated to tuition assistance.

“West Catholic staff, students, parents and alumni understand the importance of hard work,” said Hank Makarewicz.  “If you work hard, that’s what is important for success.”

“On behalf of everyone at West Catholic High School, I want to express our deep gratitude to Hank & Cheryl Makarewicz for this generous and visionary gift,” said West Catholic Principal Cynthia Kneibel. “We have the chance to impact the learning of many students, and for that we are eternally grateful.”
