The National Weather Service says a severe geomagnetic storm could make the northern lights (aurora borealis) visible from Michigan and farther south tonight.

Tonight's storm is rated as a G3. Geomagnetic storms are ranked G1 – G5.

G3 storms are considered "strong" storms and they can cause radio and satellite communication problems.

The best views of the northern lights will be in Canada, but Michigan could get a look as well. Skies are expected to remain clear in West Michigan tonight, giving a chance to see the northern lights if they become visible this far south.
