The National Weather Service says a severe geomagnetic storm that began Monday is continuing today. The storm could make the northern lights visible from Michigan tonight.

Geomagnetic storms are ranked G1 - G5. Tonight's geomagnetic storm is severe and ranks as a G4. The northern lights (Aurora Borealis) are expected to be visible in some northern states tonight.

The National Weather Service says, "solar wind conditions remain highly favorable for continued Strong Geomagnetic storming, with both fast solar wind and strong magnetic fields."

Geomagnetic storms which reach G4 levels can also create problems for satellites, spacecraft operations and power systems.
