New York City has the ball drop on New Year's Eve, but it has nothing on Escanaba's new New Year's tradition - the pasty drop.

If you’re looking for something to do on New Year’s Eve but you aren’t interested in the traditional ball drop, just drive six hours north and watch the iconic U.P. dish get lowered from the sky.

It’s the city’s second annual pasty drop, put on by the Downtown Development Authority. Because of its one-of-a-kind nature, last year’s drop garnered some national attention.

In addition to the pasty drop, other festivities will fill out the night, including fireworks at the municipal dock. The event is currently made possible by community volunteers and donations.

Once the pasty is hoisted into the sky, it can be seen from locations throughout downtown Escanaba.

Organizers hope to make the pasty drop an all-day event in the future.
