Not having to check a bag when traveling has its perks, especially with the convenience of the overhead bin. However, that's all going to change for passengers who fly with United Airlines.

The airline just announced that starting in January, they will start charging people a fee for using the overhead bins. When purchasing a ticket a new option will be available called "Basic Economy" which allows you to bring a bag on board, but it has to fit under your seat. If not, you will be stuck paying a fee to use the overhead bin.

This ticket option also doesn't allow you to choose your own seat. That will be randomly selected at check-in and doesn't guarantee that you'll be able seated with your family.

United is projected to earn $1 billion by 2020 after this change.

New York Senator, Charles Schumer, is not happy with this decision and believes it will create problems for travelers. In a press release he stated:

"The overhead bin is one of the last sacred conveniences of air travel and the fact that United Airlines - and potentially others - plan to take that convenience away unless you pay up is really troubling."

It's a possibility that other airlines may do the same thing, if it ultimately benefits United.
