The Urban Institute for Contemporary Arts (UICA) will play host to a very interesting traveling art exhibit, superusted: The 4th Midwest Biennial. It will be on exhibit from August 18 - October 23. Superusted presents the work of seventeen artists from five states across the Midwest including; Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota, North Dakota, and Wisconsin.

The 4th Midwest Biennial, superusted, originated in 2015 at The Soap Factory in Minneapolis, MN, and was curated by St. Paul’s Cheryl Wilgren Clyne. Clyne made a series of over 120 studio visits across the Midwest searching for artists whose works address challenges from this moment in time. The exhibition features performative and interactive pieces as well a mix of media — wax, straw, porcelain, laser-cut plywood, and 3-D photography.

Why superusted? Clyne said that, “Change is all around us, every day. We are hyper aware of all the changes, many are extreme, to the point of super-sized differences. This might be a thread that connects the artists in superusted. As I met with the biennial artists, I tried to find words that described those selected. Super certainly fit: Here are some of my favorite people and artists in the Midwest. An awareness that their work was changing developed, seeing progressions, how they were inspired by, or how they interpreted the world. Super and rust were relevant words to attach to the findings.”

The exhibition has already seen national attention, and UICA is the second stop of superusted’s tour. Superusted will open with a member preview and opening reception which is open to the public on August 18th, and will be on view until ArtPrize officially begins on September 21, 2016. During ArtPrize, docent-led group tours will be available on Wednesdays and Thursdays weekly starting at $10.00 a person. Superusted group tours can be booked online at uica.org 72 hours in advance.
