The UICA will present a one-night-only discussion with Joshua Rogers, the collector behind their current contemporary art exhibition Power Objects: The Future Has a Primitive Heart. UICA Executive Director Miranda Krajniak will moderate the May 8 talk, which begins at 7 pm. Attendees to this free event can also pre-order the exhibition catalog, currently in production at Hat and Beard Press.

Power Objects: The Future has a Primitive Heart is on view now at the Urban Institute for Contemporary Arts through May 15, 2015. The exhibition is a collection of work from the private collection of Joshua Rogers and Lesley Weisenbacher and is curated by Ryan Kortman. The contemporary collection features art from a variety of artists including Elijah Burgher and Molly Zuckerman-Hartung, whose works were recently on view in the Whitney Biennial.

Power Objects also showcases several nationally recognized artists including Mariano Chavez, Rachel Niffenegger, Wendy White, and Josh Reames.
The Power Objects exhibition is UICA’s second installment of its series of contemporary art collections. Ryan Kortman, Curator of Power Objects, had his own private collection on view at UICA titled, Buying Friends: The Kortman Collection.

“What UICA is doing, consciously or unconsciously, by showing private collections in a public art institution, is really very cutting edge with the ‘post-internet’ art movement,” shared Joshua Rogers. “Instead of asserting that the only curators that matter are the employees of institutions, there is a tacit recognition that there can be wisdom in allowing private collectors to be the curators. I think it’s brilliant and exciting.”

On May 08, in this special conversation with the collector, guests will learn more about the people behind Power Objects and find out why Rogers and Weisenbacher collect, what they are interested in, and how they acquire their works.  Rogers and Krajniak will be available for questions after the discussion, and guests have the opportunity to meet and mingle with the collector to lean more about pieces on view in the collection.

A Power Objects exhibition catalog by Hat and Beard Press is in production. It features photos of the works in UICA’s exhibition and essays by other collectors and Rogers and Weisenbacher’s associates. The Power Objects exhibition catalogs will be available for pre-order during the May 08 event, and guests will have an opportunity to register to have the publication signed by Rogers before shipping.

“This is a unique opportunity for the public to learn more about art and art collecting in the 21 century,” Miranda Krajniak, UICA Executive Director explained. “We are excited to feature regional art collectors exhibiting their work here at UICA, and to offer complementary, educational opportunities like this that engage our community.”
The Power Objects Collector’s Talk and Catalog Pre-order event will take place from 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm on May 08. Admission is free.
